‘The Cosby Show’ Star Malcolm-Jamal Warner Dead at 54

Warner was also known for his roles in The Resident and American Crime Story.

Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner has died suddenly. He was 54.

TMZ reports the Cosby Show star died in a drowning accident, though the outlet provided no further details. PEOPLE confirmed the passing, reporting the actor was “on a family vacation and drowned while swimming.” The incident occurred in Costa Rica.

Warner became part of TV history as The Cosby Show’s Theodore “Theo” Huxtable, the son of Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby). After the show ended, Warner transitioned to being a regular face on numerous broadcast and cable programs.

Warner’s filmography includes guest roles on 9-1-1, Community, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, American Horror Story, Touched by an Angel, The Irrational, Grown-ish and Key & Peele. He also portrayed Al “A.C.” Cowlings in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

His most prominent main cast role following his Cosby Show run was on Fox’s The Resident. He played Dr. AJ Austin on the medical drama for 96 episodes. Another highlight was the UPN sitcom Malcolm & Eddie, which saw Warner play opposite comedian Eddie Griffin for four seasons.

Warner’s most recently released on-screen work was a May 27 episode of Fox’s Alert: Missing Persons Unit.
