Case in point: her latest makeup-free selfie, exposing her gray roots and unplucked eyebrows for all they're worth.
The 42-year-old actress shared the post with the hashtag #becomingsheila, a reference to her character on the Netflix series, The Santa Clarita Diet.
"OH MY GOD How did I let it get this bad," she captioned the photo that showed her face from the nose up. "Base and brows needed. Must become her. #santaclaritadiet here we go again. Season two."
Barrymore's transparent, tongue-in-cheek attitude is one of the main reasons we love her and the zombie sitcom, in which her character, a California real estate agent, becomes a zombie and needs to feed on human flesh to survive.
While Barrymore later shared a salon selfie after making a call to her longtime stylist, Tracey Cunningham, the fact that she's not sporting any makeup in her honest photo may not be all that different for the mom of two. In fact, she told The New York Times that her simple skincare routine rarely involves any makeup.
"I would say 90 percent of my life, I wear zero makeup," she said, adding that she never leaves the house without her makeup line's Skincognito Stick Foundation "because it covers blue, red, brown, purple."
As for those brows of hers, it sounds like Barrymore may take a less-is-more approach, based off her own admission that she can't get them right.
"I constantly mess up my brows," she said. "I'm not a good pencil drawer — I always overdo it. I look like Spock."
Prepping for season two of The Santa Clarita Diet is a bit different for Barrymore than with season one. The star famously dropped 20 pounds to get ready for the show, admitting to letting herself go after her divorce from ex-husband Will Kopelman.
"[The show] turned out to be this great thing I got to escape into, lose 20 pounds, get liberated with Sheila and kind of have this physical transformation," Barrymore told Magic Radio. "It gave me a lot of goals and things that weren't just like showing up to work every day. I had to do things to be her that were actually very positive for my real life.
Barrymore slimmed down by upping her protein intake and hitting the gym, rocking through a variety of workout classes from hip hop to hiking and hot yoga. She also drinks 64 ounces of water per day, which happens to be her best secret for clear, glowing skin!0comments
Even with these healthy lifestyle changes, the actress says those naughty cravings will never subside. "I've been very disciplined and all I did was cry and dream about pizza. I still am dreaming and crying about pizza."
