Carey offered a wide range of excuses for the way the events unfolded, even if those excuses were contested by the live show's production.
One of the reasons Carey gave for the debacle was that a faulty earpiece prevented her from hearing the music. Many social media users chastised her for doing a poor job of lip-syncing, but Carey explained the difficulties of hearing any music at all to sing along to.
Another issue Carey raised was that there were too many dancers on stage, not allowing Carey to get close enough to any other singers to try to find the song's rhythm. The singer's creative director was let go shortly after the event, as it was their decision to add more dancers at the last minute.
Just as Carey was moving away from the embarrassing event, a new music video premiered which caused even more drama.

In 2016, Carey broke off her relationship with James Packer, with the two being engaged at one point. To cope with the loss, Carey turned to her music, debuting a video for the brand-new single "I Don't," a less than subtle response to her ex.
In the video, Carey torches a wedding dress on the lawn of an extravagant mansion, making for a compelling and emotional scene. As it turns out, that sequence was even more emotional than it appeared, with the dress being the actual gown she intended to wear to her wedding to Packer, and the mansion being the home they shared together.
Not that anyone needs to cling to the past, it made sense to get rid of the dress, but considering it was estimated to be worth $250,000, many were shocked to see that she'd set it on fire just to make a gesture.
However, Carey had a new man in her life, so what's the sense in being reminded of old relationships?

The singer began dating Bryan Tanaka, a singer and dancer almost 15 years her junior. Although they had an age difference, they clearly had similar interests, as Carey was mounting a comeback.
Sadly, the relationship was short-lived, with the two calling it quits back in April.
According to sources close to Carey, the relationship was never meant as a long-term commitment, but rather, Tanaka helped Carey cope with the loss of Packer.
Now that Carey is once again single, she's been spotted regularly with ex-husband Nick Cannon, the father of her two six-year-olds. With the two appearing to thoroughly enjoy their time together, rumors are circulating that the two might be back on track towards resuming their relationship, although neither of the two will confirm anything more than friendship.
Suffice it to say, after the year Carey's had, she deserves to be pampered with a spa night.
