True crime is one of the most addicting genres of film, literature and TV. On the streaming front, Netflix has its fair share of stories based on real life crimes, if you know where to look.

While they have revered documentary series like Making a Murderer and The Keepers, sometimes you need a full-on dramatization to sell the the emotional highs and lows of a case.

Luckily, Netflix has a solid crop of true crime dramas that adapt murder trials, robberies, drug busts and other nefarious cases from throughout history.

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson

The FX original series is a critical darling and for good reason.

The show is a dramatization of the “Trial of the Century” when Simpson was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. 

The minds behind American Horror Story brought together an all-star cast for the show: Cuba Gooding Jr. (O. J. Simpson) Sterling K. Brown (Christopher Darden), Sarah Paulson (Marcia Clark), Courtney B. Vance (Johnnie Cochran), John Travolta (Robert Shapiro), David Schwimmer (Robert Kardashian) and Nathan Lane (F. Lee Bailey).

It’s a thrill ride that takes you through all the steps of the case and trial. It’s worth a watch whether you lived through the media frenzy of the original trial or have only seen clips. 

Narcos / Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal

Narcos is the acclaimed Netflix original series that recounts the life of infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, played by Wagner Moura.

The series focuses on Escobar’s wars without other drug lords and the DEA, and is one of Netflix’s most buzzed-about series.

Also available on Netlfix is the Spanish adaptation of the cocaine kingpin’s life, Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal. Made in Escobar’s home country of Columbia, the show was acclaimed upon its 2012 release, but also stirred up some controversy about its glorification of the subject.

The Great Train Robbery

Based on one of Britain’s most notorious crimes, The Great Train Robbery is a two-part mini-series that recounts the 1963 theft of £2.6 million (£50 million if adjust for inflation).

It’s told from two perspectives: the robbers planning and executing the heist and the officers called in to investigate the crime afterwards. 

True Crime

Simply titled, True Crime is an anthology series that adapts various modern cases from Australia and New Zealand. 

Each episode is the length of a film, so each case get a decent amount of time to unfold.

This true crime story stands out due to its setting: the Old West.

Netflix has the sole season of the Canadian procedural series, which adapts various real stories from the Pinkerton National Detective Agency dating back to the 1860s.

Historia de un clan

One of the more insane true crime stories adapted to series is the Argentine show Historia de un clan.

The award-winning series is based on the Puccio family, who were convicted of four kidnappings and three murders back in the ’80s.
