With two prequels to his seminal sci-fi horror film Alien released into the world, Ridley Scott has shown us we should never expect what his next move could be, especially in regards to what fans are pining for. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant only had tenuous connections to the original film, leaving fans slightly disappointed that they didn’t get to see many familiar elements.

During a recent Q&A with the director, Scott explained that, based on the timelines of his prequels, it would most likely be two movies before we could see Ellen Ripley, central character in the first four movies, once again.

When answering a question about potentially using CGI to de-age Sigourney Weaver to reprise her role, Scott explained, “Well, we’re heading towards the back end of the first alien, so that may be feasible.”

The director continued, “Ripley’s going to be somebody’s daughter, obviously, if we’re coming in from the back end.”

Scott then added, “The time constraints, of what’s the time between this film, where we leave David heading going off for that colony, I think we’re probably two films out from even considering her.”

This isn’t to say we should expect to see Ellen Ripley in the franchise again anytime soon, with the director having taken five years between Prometheus and Covenant, that would result in it being another ten years to have made another two sequels.

Prior to the release of any of the prequels, the Alien franchise had turned into a mockery of what it once represented, with the last two installments having forced a rivalry between the xenomorphs and the aliens from the Predator series. Scott’s return to that universe should have been a triumphant one, but Prometheus was met with mixed reactions, with its connections to the Alien franchise feeling forced.

Covenant got the series slightly back on course, but the underwhelming box office reception put the whole saga in jeopardy. Scott, however, has ignored any of those criticisms, regularly explaining how he could make anywhere between two and four more prequel films that took place before his original movie.

After collaborating with her on the film Chappie, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp pitched his idea to bring Weaver back into the fold with a sequel that would have followed the events of Aliens, ignoring any of those subsequent films. Despite fan interest in the project, both Blomkamp and Scott have expressed that the rumored Alien 5 would never come to fruition.
