The WWE announced filming dates for its upcoming Cruiserweight Classic tournament. Triple H, the organizer and booker for the upcoming tournament, announced that the tournament will be filmed June 23, July 14, August 26 and September 14 at Full Sail University, the filming site for WWE's developmental brand NXT. Tickets for the tapings will go on sale this Friday, May 20th.

The WWE has been teasing the Crusierweight Classic, formerly the Global Cruiserweight Series, for months. The tournament will feature a mix of current developmental talent and indie stars, including Rich Swann, Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, Zack Sabre Jr., Noam Dar, Ho Ho Lun and Akira Tozawa. Interestingly enough, the WWE has teamed with several independent promotions such as EVOLVE and PROGRESS for the tournament, as the latter promotions have hosted qualifying matches to promote the show.

While the cruiserweight division, which is typically reserved for wrestlers weighing 220 pounds or less, are a staple of many wrestling promotions such as New Japan Pro Wrestling, the WWE retired its Cruiserweight belt in 2007 and has more or less moved away from traditional cruiserweight wrestling. While the WWE still employs wrestlers who could be classified as cruiserweights, the promotion prefers not to differentiate between its smaller and larger wrestlers. The Cruiserweight Classic, which has a weight limit of 205 pounds, is seen as a chance to showcase current developmental talent as well as give several indie stars an unofficial WWE tryout.
