In only a couple years, the New Day went from a fringy mid-card gimmick to one the most memorable teams WWE will ever see. Having smashed Demolition’s record for longest reign as tag team champions, The New Day proved that they were far more than just a comedy act. And now as SmackDown Tag Team Champions, they have nothing left to conquer.
Is it time for singles competition?

The New Day addressed this question specifically in an interview with WWE.com.
WWE: You guys have obviously broken several tag team title records, but are there any plans to bring a singles championship into the New Day fold?
Kofi Kingston: It’s always in the cards, you know? And the thing about The New Day, whether it’s singles titles or tag titles, is that when one of us wins, we all win. So, it’s something very interesting and something the people have asked us from the first day.
Xavier Woods: From jump!
Big E: But imagine ya boys Freebirding โ nay, New Daying โ a singles title. That’s fresh. That’s what the people need. That’s what the people want to see.

This is interesting. Considering that this interview was conducted on WWE soil by WWE media, the question is loaded with inference. Could WWE be hinting at the New Day entering the world of solo competition?
It’s certainly possible, but what they are more likely to be doing is seeing if fans and media will nibble at the idea.
There’s just not much left to accomplish as a tag team. A lot of that has to to do with a total lack of competition in the tag team ranks. Outside of their feud with the Usos, all of the New Day’s battles have been forgettable. It’s not their fault that their strength of schedule has been laughable, but it’s time for some new challenges.
Kingston and Big E already own turns with the Intercontinental Championship, while Woods remains relatively unproven. It’s time for this adventure. However, there’s only one New Day member that needs to be unleashed into the solo ranks and that’s Big E.
Let’s hope WWE gets the feedback they need from this little teaser and can be sparked into taking action. Free Big E!
