If you look back at the big booms in the wrestling business, you’ll notice two major factors that contributed to the mainstream success of the industry. One, a babyface mega star who could capture the imaginations of children and adults alike and two, a strong heel faction like the NWO, DX or Four Horsemen who used their numbers to stack the odds against said babyface.

In the modern WWE, John Cena certainly fits the bill for that babyface mega star, but you could argue that after Cena there isn’t much of a succession plan. Obviously a 70 year old named Vince would love for it to be Roman Reigns, but it just isn’t happening. Yet.

As for the factions, this is quite possibly the first time in wrestling history where there are literally no heel factions in the WWE. The Wyatt family were the lone stable holding it down, but with Luke Harper’s exit, Bray Wyatt has proved himself lacking in membership numbers.

The only obstacles babyfaces currently have to face are 2 on 1 beatdowns. How much sympathy can the audience feel for a guy when that guy only have to find one partner to even up the odds? Anyone can find one partner.

Even Roman Reigns.

The benefits for having a heel faction go much deeper than just building up a babyface. As we’ve seen with Luke Harper’s recent bolt, fans inevitably end up wanting to see one member of the faction change their ways and break free.

Oustide of the Wyatts, who for the majority of their existence were only a three man operation, we haven’t seen a strong heel faction in a while.

Now is the time to start building that next faction who can help push the business to boomtown heights. Here are five possible heel factions the WWE needs to make happen soon.

5. The Glorious Revolution – Bobby Roode, The Miz, Maryse, Tyler Breeze, Fandango

glorious

The Glorious Revolution, also called the Revolution of 1688, was the overthrow of King James II of England (James VII of Scotland) by a union of English Parliamentarians with the Dutch stadtholder William III of Orange.

In the WWE, however, it would be a group of self-obsessed wrestlers led byย Glorious Bobby Roode and The Miz, who could back up their narcissim in the ring. They would team with a revamped (ie, no random police shirts) Breeze, Fandango.ย

Roode would make the perfect leader and the eventual tension between he and The Miz would be golden. Breezango (we’d never say that name again, by the way) could finally get the legit respectย they deserve.ย

4. The Varsity Club – Shelton Benjamin, Chad Gable, Jason Jordan, Jack Swagger

varsity club

The Varsity Club was one of the most underappreciated Heel factions in the old WCW. It featured superstars who actually competed in college and had them wear legit wrestling singlets and headgear and overpower opponents with their technical skills. Of course, instead of using technical skills, they nearly always resorted to cheating.ย

With Shelton Benjamin set to return to action this year, he could join forces with Jordan and Gable and a returning Jack Swagger to run roughshod over Smackdown LIVE. Bo Dallas could even drop his stupid name andย reclaim his birthright as Taylor Rotunda, son of original Varsity Club member, Mike Rotunda.ย

3. Five Star – Cesaro, Gargano, Tommasso, Kassius Ohno, Cedric Alexander

five star

The Professional Wrestlers. The Workrate. Whatever you want to call them, they would be bad ass. Weย start with Cesaro railing against having to wear a stupid, tear-off suit every week and pretend like he’s James Bond. Cesaro states that he is tired of having to call himself a WWE Superstar when he is a professional wrestler; in fact, the best professional wrestler in the world. Cesaro then recruits three other NXT wrestlers to join him, Garganoย and Ciampa and Cesaro’s former ROH tag team partner, Kassius Ohno.

While the four supporting members would be used to boost up Cesaro to championship heights, they could recruit other cruiserweights and UK wrestlers like Pete Dunne who’s only gimmick is being a total bad ass in the ring. Not having a gimmick would be their gimmick. ย

2. The Bullet Club – Finn Balor, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Enzo and Cass

First hurdle here is that the WWE has to purchase the naming rights from New Japan, but I’m fairly certain they could scrape together the money from Vince’s couch cushions. ย

With Finn Balor as the leader, The Bullet Clubย could recapture all of the New Japan magic that would literally be new to most of the WWE Universe. As Enzo and Cass’ act grows stale with the audience (you know it’s happening), they would greatly benefit from joining a heel faction where they would only have to slightly alter their gimmicks.ย

This version of the Bullet Club would fill the DX, NWO role of the group you love to hate or hate to love.

1. The Bloodline – Roman Reigns, The Usos and Nia Jax.

The Bloodline

Before the brand split, the WWE had started pulling the trigger on what is the most perfect solution for rebuilding Roman Reigns. Reigns had suddenly started teaming up with his real life family, The Usos as they battled the AJ Styles led Bullet Club. They even gave them the awesome name, The Bloodline, which plays off their heritage coming from the most famous family in wrestling history.ย The Bloodline’s actual family treeย includes legends such as The Rock, Yokozuna, The Wild Samoans and Rikishi.

Ever since the Usos dropped the face paint, they’v been allowed to shine as legit bad asses. Nia Jax would be the WWE’s first woman enforcer since Chyna and no one could use a revamp more than Roman Reigns. If Roman was finally allowed to drop the Shield gear and let more of his personality seep into his promos, he could finallyย become the Heel the WWE Universe has been asking for. The heel turn would gain the respect of all the hardcore fans who have been booing him for years, which, ironically, would set up Reigns future face turn to become the mega hero Vince has always envisioned.ย
