5 Greatest "Double Champions" In WWE History

On December 18th, Roman Reigns will attempt to do what only few have done before him when he attempts to become a double WWE champion! Reigns, who is the current United States Champion, will face Kevin Owens for his WWE Universal Championship at WWE Roadblock: End of the Line.

Some have simultaneously held individual and tag team championships while others have attempted to defend two individual championships at once.

It remains to be seen if Reigns can obtain his goal, but if the rumors are true , the Big Dog would be in Big Company.

Here are the 5 greatest “Double Champions” in WWE history.

1. Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin (tie)

These two WWE legends make the list together. No one, including Austin, was a fan of his heel turn, but it did lead to one of the most impressive, albeit short lived tandems in WWE history. To cement his heel status, Austin teamed with Triple H and began calling themselves The “Two Man Power Trip”. Soon after, HHH would win the Intercontinental championship, then both men would win the tag team championships in a match against the reunited Brothers of Destruction, Undertaker and Kane. The duo were both double champions until Triple H lost the Intercontinental title to Kane at the Judgement Day Pay Per View, and then the team lost the Tag titles to Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit the next night on Raw, in a match where Triple H suffered a massive quadriceps injury that would sideline him for nearly an entire year.

4. The Ultimate Warrior

One of the most famous double champions was crowned in 1990, when WrestleMania VI was held at the SkyDome in Toronto, Canada. WWF Champion Hulk Hogan faced off against rising mega star and Intercontinental Champion Ultimate Warrior in “The Ultimate Challenge.” Hogan passed the belt and the torch of the WWE’s number one babyface to Warrior, however, due to the rules of WWE at the time, Warrior was forced to vacated the Intercontinental title almost immediately afterwards. Not really sure what the point of a title vs title match was if you couldn’t actually defend both title simultaneously, but it still goes down as one of the most memorable Wrestlemania matches in history.

3. The Miz

Even before The Miz became the best heel in the WWE, he had the honor of carrying both the United States Championship and one-half of the Unified Tag Team Championship (with The Big Show). The Miz also had a quick reign as both WWE Champion and Tag Team Champion alongside his WrestleMania opponent, John Cena (they were forced to team and won the titles, but Miz attacked Cena afterwards, and the former champions invoked their rematch clause immediately to win them back), which makes him one of the few people on this list to be a dual champion more than once.

As teased on the December 13th episode of Smackdown, Miz could be looking to complete the feat a third time as he has intentions on taking AJ Styles WWE championship.

2. Seth Rollins

Roman Reigns is looking to duplicate his Shield brother this weekend (sort of), as Seth Rollins was the first to ever simultaneously hold both the US and WWE World Championship (Roman would be the first to hold the US and Universal). Seth completed the feat by competing in a Winner Takes All match with John Cena at SummerSlam, 2015, for both the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the United States Championship, after Jon Stewart attacked Cena. Yes, TV’s Jon Stewart. Rollins would go on to defend both championships at Night of Champions, losing the US back to Cena while retaining the World against Sting.

Out of all the impressive double champions on this list, Seth Rollins is the only to have to defend both singles championships against two different competitors in two different matches on the same night.

1. Kurt Angle

Yes, it’s true, Kurt Angle does get extra points for being not only a double champion, but also an Olympic gold medalist while doing so. Within four months of his debut, Angle had won his very first title, defeating Val Venis to become the WWF European champion in February of 2000. Three weeks later, he would win his second title, beating Chris Jericho to become the self-professed “Eurocontinental Champion”. Angle’s reign as a double Champion ended at WrestleMania 2000 when he defended both titles in a special two-fall Triple Threat match, where the first fall was for the Intercontinental title and second fall was for the European title. Angle lost both falls, despite not being pinned either time.
