Eric Bischoff Calls Out Vince McMahon For "Boring" Flag Match

08/31/2017 04:37 pm EDT

John Cena's patriotic return to SmackDown came with high expectations last night. For some, Cena's quarrel with Rusev which lead to a Flag Match at Battleground was a respectable idea. For others, like Eric Bishoff, for instance, it could not be a worse idea.

On the most recent episode of his podcast, Bischoff on Wrestling, the former WCW boss had quite the hot take regarding the creation of this match:

"I hate it. I just hate it. I hate it. I hate it. God, whose idea was that? Vince McMahon, if you are listening to this or someone that works for you is listening to this re-think that...My teeth hurt just listening to you talk about this."

For Bischoff, the concept of a flag match is outdated and something fans just won't be able to get into:

"What's a Flag Match?! What the hell is a Flag Match?! It's like it's been around for a thousand years and everybody knows what a Flag Match is. So, I am going to take your flag? Or, you're going to take my flag? I am sorry… do not care. Boring."

The former RAW GM may right. A flag match just doesn't seem to fit in 2017's WWE. Especially considering John Cena and Rusev had feuded before on exactly the same contention: my country is better than yours. While this may be a timeless formula in wrestling psychology, the market for this story is already full.

Both Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton and Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles have jingoistic overtones. And to be frank, none of those programs are connecting in such a way that WWE would be logically incentivized to add another to their docket. But, they have, and we now have 3 foreign heels essentially sharing lines on why America sucks.

Bischoff singling out Vince McMahon was a bold move, one that could conceivably land on Vince's desk in the near future. McMahon may not love Bischoff and his opinions, but he surely respects him as Eric Bischoff was the only promoter who's ever one-upped, Vince McMahon.

Now just because Vince may respect Bischoff, don't expect WWE to audible off of this flag match - it's happening folks, WWE already advertised it. Don't expect much out of the build up, especially considering Rusev will be echoing whatever Jinder Mahal said that night. That and the fact that Cena winning is already a foregone conclusion means that WWE has given us little reason to watch - unless you're really into flags.
