It is the 28-year-old comedian’s first comedy special, and in it, he shares his Latino roots, “from uhinged family dance-offs to his mom’s unforgettable life lessons.” The special was filmed in his hometown of Miami and premiered on Jan. 7. Directed by Nicholas Gossen, American Boy is executive produced by Hernández and Matthew Vaughan and produced by Rotten Science.
Hernández joined SNL in 2022 for Season 48 as a featured player and was the show’s first Gen Z cast member. He was promoted to repertory player for Season 50. Since his introduction, he’s become a favorite among viewers for his comedic timing and memorable characters such as Domingo, as well as The Movie Guy and Grant, one half of “The Couple You Can’t Believe Are Together,” for Weekend Update.
Meanwhile, Hernández joins a handful of SNL stars who have comedy specials on Netflix. Seth Meyers, Pete Davidson, Jenny Slate, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Conan O’Brien, and John Mulaney are all on Netflix, as well as fan-favorite hosts Dave Chappelle, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Nate Bargatze. Of course, there are plenty more comedy specials on Netflix. It can also be assumed that American Boy won’t be Hernández’s final standup special.

That being said, American Boy has been a good alternative to SNL, which has been on its winter hiatus and will be returning on Saturday. Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard is set to host alongside musical guest A$AP Rocky. SNL will be down a cast member after Bowen Yang said his final goodbye at the end of the Christmas episode, which was hosted by his Wicked: For Good co-star. But there will still be much to look forward to, with plenty of fan favorites in the cast, including Hernández.
Those waiting for Saturday Night Live to return can watch Marcello Hernández: American Boy now on Netflix. The platform is also the home to hundreds of standup comedy specials, so there is much more to watch after you finish American Boy. SNL returns on Saturday on NBC, streaming the next day on Peacock, where all 51 seasons are streaming.
