For a guy that is known for doing a slew of rom-com movies, Hugh Grant has an interesting opinion on love and marriage. The 55-year-old actor stated that he simply feels that marriage can be “unromantic,” that he does not believe in monogamy, and that affairs can “keep marriages together.”
Grant told Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show, “I always admire the French and the Italians who are very devoted to their marriages.” He continued, “They take them extremely seriously, but it is understood that there might be other visitors at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. You just never boast about.”

The father of four also added, “They never say anything, but that’s what keeps marriages together.”
While he does not believe in the idea of a monogamous marriage, he did admit that it sounds nice in theory. “I can see the lovely aspect if you marry exactly the right person — your best friend and it’s cozy and it’s lovely,” he stated. “But, people make so many mistakes. Do I think human beings are meant to be in 40-year-long monogamous, faithful, relationships? No, No, No. Whoever said they were? Only the Bible or something.”
Since his split with Elizabeth Hurley, Grant has never married. The two split in 2000 after being together for 13 years. He did, however, welcome four children over the course of four years – two with Tinglan Hong and two with Anna Eberstein, according to ET.
Grant has recently been making the rounds promoting his new movie Florence Foster Jenkins. While on The Late Late Show, he recently opened up about going into therapy during a tough time period in his life.
“I went mad in 2007,” he recalled. “I got massaged into madness. I went on a holiday in the Maldives and I was extremely bored, so I thought, ‘I’ll have another massage.’ I was having about 30 massages a day. At the end of the holiday, I felt a little strange… I got on the plane to go home, opened the newspaper reading the football results, and I burst into tears. And I couldn’t stop crying for three weeks. It was completely absurd… so I went to see shrinks then.”
