Glee star Lauren Potter is engaged!

Potter, who played Becky on the Fox show, accepted a promise ring from her boyfriend Timothy Spear.

The couple had been childhood friends who reconnected in the past few years. After dating for a while, Spear popped the question during a romantic picnic in Laguna Beach.

"He picked out the ring, made payments on it, and then planned the picnic and the moment to get down on one knee to ask her to promise to be his one-and-only and marry him when they are ready," Potter's mom Robin Sinkhorn told PEOPLE. "Then they watched the sunset together."

Potter and Spear, both 26, became friends as youngsters since their parents connected at an infant stimulation class at the Children's Center in Riverside. The soon to be husband and wife both happen to have Down syndrome.

The actress has become an advocate for individuals with special needs. She also recently had a role on Veep. But she never forgot about her childhood friend.

"We've kept in touch over the years, but it wasn't until the kids were reunited while they were both living in Laguna Beach," Sinkhorn said. "When Lauren ended a relationship, Timothy immediately asked her out and they have been together since."
