No specific details about her role have been revealed at this time, but it is known that the theme of the season is inspired by the 2016 presidential election.
The sub-title of the season will be announced on Thursday, as first reported by Variety.
Dunham recently wrapped her own show, Girls, which aired on HBO, so this is her first major project since.

In addition to Dunham, we know that American Horror Story vets Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will star, as well as series newcomers Billie Lourd (who previously worked with Ryan Murphy on FOX’s Scream Queens) and Billy Eichner, from Billy on the Street.
Other than the aforementioned details, Murphy and the FX network has been notoriously tight-lipped about the plans for the season. They’re keeping a lot of info under wraps.
The series is reportedly said to be filming, however, as American Horror Story writer/producer John J. Gray confirmed that it had.
