One of the films that helped define Zack Snyder‘s career was his remake of George Romero’s zombie classic, Dawn of the Dead, which was released in 2004, and will be getting a deluxe Blu-ray release this Halloween with the help of Scream Factory.

In the film, a group of characters finds refuge from a zombie infestation at a mall, which provides them with all the resources they find necessary to make lives for themselves. However, after the realization that they have a finite amount of resources and must seek other communities of survivors, the survivors risk life and limb to see what lays beyond the horizon.

The original film was a sequel to Romero’s genre-defining zombie classic Night of the Living Dead, which introduced audiences to the concept of the living undead, allowing Dawn of the Dead to pick up after the events of the initial film. Romero’s Dawn focused more on the collapse of society and perceived priorities of society in the late ’70s, containing both messages of consumerism and racism.

Snyder’s film, on the other hand, focused more on how terrifying a threat like zombies would be instead of focusing on how dangerous society as a whole could be. The 2004 remake, in addition to quasi-zombie movie 28 Days Later, helped usher in a new wave of “fast zombies,” with the horror film staples previously only being lumbering and decaying threats that didn’t always provide an immediate danger.

In addition to updating the familiar narrative to give audiences more jump-scares, Snyder’s remake also introduced audiences to his style and direction, which he’d hone even further with his follow-up, 300, in addition to Watchmen, Man of Steel, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
