Could Rey Mysterio be making a return to WWE? Well, according to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Mysterio has several suitors, all of whom have heavy incentive to bring in the future Hall of Famer.
“Mysterio, 42, is currently seen on El Rey’s Lucha Underground. He is signed through the end of the third season, which is set to air in September, and would then be free to work with any company after his 90-day non-compete clause expires.”

This is where things get interesting. Barrasso claims that the market for Mysterio may be heated:
“There is strong incentive for both companies to make Mysterio an offer he cannot refuse. WWE needs a big Latino star, as well as a great ambassador to Latin America. GFW/Impact is very motivated to move away from Alberto El Patron and generate some positive headlines by inking the legendary Mysterio.”
Barrasso brings up some interesting points. All three promotions have proper incentive to acquire the services of Mysterio. WWE has limited Latino star power and Mysterio could bring excitement to any area of the wrestling conglomerate’s card. For GFW, they could use a splash or at least some positive press as their current champion, Alberto El Patron has been suspended indefinitely. For Lucha Underground, the budding promotion needs to hold on to the little star power they have and keep Mysterio.

Odds are, if WWE wants him badly enough, that’s where he’ll sign. Could he be the perfect fit for a sputtering 205 Live? Frankly, WWE may not have enough room for Mysterio as their roster is already full of neglected talent. From this vantage point, it doesn’t feel like WWE will chase him for too long.
That leaves things between Lucha Underground and GFW. Jeff Jarrett’s promotion has a little momentum coming off a successful Slammiversary pay-per-view. Although a rotten apple of a champion in El Patron hurts the company, bringing in a star like Mysterio could be the perfect way to make fans forget about El Patron’s numerous transgressions. To be short, GFW needs Rey Mysterio.
Nonetheless, 3 promotions competing for the same talent will be a fun narrative to follow. We’ll keep you up to date as we learn more on the situation. Stay tuned, folks.
