Conleth Hill, who plays Varys on the show, had the gift of watching that scene unfold from the set. While speaking with Variety this week, Hill revealed that Jon and Dany handled themselves much better than some may have expected them to.
“They’re both headstrong kids,” he said. “They’ve been the leader of their own pack for so long, and there’s of course a history of bad blood between their families. But they managed not to kill each other.”

Hill continued, saying that there was one factor in particular that kept all the tempers from flaring.
“It was ice and fire really. I think Tyrion’s temperature control helped a lot. I don’t think it went as badly as it could have. Had their character’s met earlier, they might have pulled a knife or had a fight. I think they’re just getting to the stage now where the future of the world is more important than any ego trip they might have had,” he said.
Jon and Daenerys will continue their partnership when Game of Thrones returns to HBO next Sunday, August 7 at 9 p.m.
