After the Season 6 finale of Game of Thrones wiped out a handful of important characters in less than ten minutes, many fans thought that Season 7 would be full of important deaths.

That wasn’t exactly the case this year, as the death toll was actually pretty tame. However, most of the characters that went down in this season had a pretty big impact on the show as a whole. In some cases, their deaths were even more important than their lives on-screen.

To celebrate the penultimate season of the most epic show on television (you know it’s true), let’s take a minute to look back at every character that died this year.

House Frey

Arya’sย story has consisted of revenge plots and assassinations over the last couple of years, and she kept that trend going into the new year.

Season 6 ended with Aryaย killing Walder Frey, the man who killed her mother and brother. However, this wasn’t enough for Aryaย โ€”ย she wanted to take out all of House Frey so that this could never happen again.

The season opened with Walderย Frey, who’s supposed to be dead, holding a banquet for the rest of his family.ย

It turns out that Aryaย was wearing Walder’sย face, and she poisoned all of the men in the room.ย

So long, Frey family.

The Sand Snakes

The Sand Snakes were lethal warriors, but they were no match fo the pure power of Euronย Greyjoy’sย fleet.ย

The evil Euronย took over Yara’sย fleet while she was at sea, slaughtering most of the crew in the process.

This includes two of the Martellย daughters, who Euronย killed with their own weapons.ย

Killing two of the three Sand Snakes wasn’t enough for Euronย and Cersei. He took Yara for himself, and turned Elliaย and one of her daughters over to Cersei. The queen proceeded to poison and torture the two remaining Martellย women and they haven’t been heard from since.

Olenna Tyrell

In perhaps the best death scene of the entire season, Olenna Tyrellย went out on her terms, no one else’s.

The matriarch of High Garden knew she was going to die and Jaime gave her the option to take a poison that would give her death without any pain.

Olennaย ended up taking the poison, but not until she told Jaime how terrible Cersei was for his well-being. She told him that Cersei would be the end of him if he stuck around.

Lady Tyrellย also revealed that she was the one that orchestrated the death of Joffrey back in Season 4.

“I want her to know it was me,” was easily one of the best lines of Season 7.

Randyll and Dickon Tarly

No one has ever really liked Randyllย Tarlyย โ€” mainly because he was SUPER hateful to everyone’sย best-friend-ever Samwellย โ€” so his death wasn’t really upsetting to anyone.

Watching his son Dickon stick by his side was a little disappointing though, as we all held out hope that he would get a little better.

The most important factor in the deaths of the Tarlyย men was the way Daenerysย handled the situation.

Dany was trying to prove that she wasn’t going to take any prisoners, but the execution of Randyllย and Dickonย showed that she’s still got a mean-streak that she has to deal with.

Thoros of Myr

When Jon Snow led seven notable characters on a ridiculous expedition north of the wall, fans expected there to be quite a few casualties. Much to our collective surprise, only one of them went down.

Thorosย of Myrย met his end at the paws of a zombifiedย polar bear, and it didn’t exactly hit any fans in the feels.

It wasn’t emotional, but the death of Thorosย had some far-reaching implications in the world of Westeros. Let’s remember, Thorosย was a Red Priest.

With Melisandreย gone, Thorosย was the only one in Westerosย who could bring people back from the dead. Now, Jon Snow and Bericย Dondarrion will have to find a new supplier for all of their resurrection needs.

Viserion

While Viserion was only a dragon, his death was definitely more important than any human’sย this season.

The Night King took Viserionย down with an ice spear while Daenerysย could do nothing but watch helplessly. The queen-to-be was devastated about losing one of her children, but we soon found out there was much more to this scene than we thought.

At the end of the episode, the Night King used his magical undeadย powers to bring Viserionย back under his control.

The final scene in the season showed everyone just how big of a moment this was. The Night King rode Viserionย to Eastwatch by the sea and proceeded to tear down an entire section of the 8,000-year-old wall, letting his entire army into Westeros.

Littlefinger

Littlefinger has been a major player in the Game of Thrones since the very first season, but his days had been numbered for some time.ย

The deceptive character had been playing Arya and Sansaย Stark against each other for most of the season. His lies almost had the two sisters going to war with one another over nothing.

However, in one of the finale’s biggest twists, Sansaย revealed that she and Aryaย were onto Littleginger the whole time. With the help of the all-seeing Bran, the duo had Littlefingerย choking on his twisted words.

He might have been a snake, but the series was always interesting when Littlefingerย was involved.
