Spoilers Ahead!
Theory #1: Could Tony Be A Ghost?
Tony, the lovable modern day greaser portrayed by Christian Navarro, has been portrayed as Clay’s guardian angel throughout the series. However, some fans were under the impression that Tony might actually be a ghost.
These particular theorists called light to the fact that Tony wears ’50s style outfits and has outdated mannerisms. They hypothesize that Tony could actually be a ghost that belongs to another time period.
While this theory is intriguing, it is also the one that has been nearly universally debunked. One shred of evidence that does not support the theory that Tony is a ghost is that there are no supernatural tones to the series. Another problem with this theory is that Tony has interacted with characters that are not Clay.
Theory #2: Could Hannah Be Alive?
The primary storyline for 13 Reasons Why revolves around teenage girl named Hannah committing suicide and leaving behind a series of tapes for those who were involved in her life. Despite this, some fans are theorizing that Hannah could actually be alive.
A Reddit user pointed out the fact that the show uses the Butterfly Effect in that one small change can alter the course of the story. Up to this point, the general assumption has been that every incident led to Hannah’s suicide. However, it could be possible that one small act of kindness changes the course of history and Hannah decides not to kill herself.
The entire story would then be a hypothetical look at what could have happened.
Another similar theory states that Hannah is actually alive in the show’sย current timeline. The evidence to this theory is that only Tony and Hannah’s parents witnessed her death. Every other character on the show learned of her death through word of mouth.
Theory #3: Does Tyler Have A Dark Future?
Fans of the show have seen that Tyler has suspicious habits with guns. Over the course of the series, Tyler is frequently bullied by Clay.ย
Clay has done terrible things to Tyler such as sending naked photos of him to classmates and just being an all-around jerk. One Reddit user is under the impression that Tyler could become a serial killer.
In the final episode of Season 1, Tyler is shown with a suitcase full of guns. The Redditย user thinks that Tyler might not be planning to murder one person, but rather many people in a massive killing spree.
The user also theorizes Tyler is hanging up the pictures of the characters he intends to kill. While the show definitely has a dark vibe, this storyline seems too sinister to be true.
Theory #4: Did Alex really commit suicide?
The first season of 13 Reasons Why ends on a massive cliffhanger. Alex, who is portrayed by Miles Heizer, is suffering from a headshot wound and it is uncertain as to whether he will survive. Because the show revolves around the controversial subject of teen suicide, many fans are under the impression that he shot himself. Also, throughout the show, Alex and Hannah have displayed several similarities in their personality so it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility for Alex to kill himself.
However, some fans are speculating that Alex’s gunshot wound was not self-inflicted and that there was another shooter involved in the incident. Theorists are guessing that Devin Druid’s character, Tyler, actually pulled the trigger.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Miles Heizer addressed the theory.
“That’s another subject that’s very rarely shown onscreen and is probably a lot more common than people think it is. People attempting to take their lives and it not happening, I’m sure that will bring a crazy set of issues,” he said. “It would be interesting to go into that.”
The supporters of this theory recall the scene in which Tyler’s suitcase of guns indicates that he had a sinister plan in mind.
