Alright, winter, we get it, last month was just a little fluke. As the mercury drops, it’s time to break out those layers — including coats, jackets, oversized sweaters, and our current favorite, the cape. The cape has become increasingly popular in recent years, although the terminology that surrounds it can sometimes be really confusing. Here, we break it down for you to help you choose which cape to add to your fashion investments collection.

The Blanket

Often called blanket coats, blanket capes or blanket wraps, we’re classifying them as anything that has an ambiguous sleeve or no sleeve at all. We love Rag and Bone’s classic take, as well as River Island’s zip up version. If you want a touch of luxury, tryย Talitha’s leather-trimmed version. If value is what you’re after, MiH Jeans’ reversible takeย will keep you warm.

The Blazer

The cape blazer has risen to popularity in the last year, and we love its ability to make an outfit feel both formal and flowy. Look for anything that has a structured shoulder and arm slits. The stand-out cape blazer in our eyes is Nasty Gal’s version. We also love Lavish Alice’s collarless version. Mural’s white cape blazerย can elevate any cocktail situation, and while cape blazers typically aren’t for outerwear, Missguided’s grey wool styleย is a home-run for those looking to showcase this look on their way to work.

The Poncho

Despite having some gnarly iterations in the past (think the Ugly Betty poncho), ponchos have gotten the cool girl seal of approval recently. A good place to start would be See by Chloe’s easy, neutral brushed versionย or Apiece Apart’s fringe-trimmed one. Topshop’s ponchoย is a more casual one that can be worn over jeans and sneaks, and a Missoni piece in the brand’s signature printย can be worn in winter over a t-neck and in summer with Palazzo pants.ย

The Classic

If you’re a purist when it comes to capes, try a classic, Kate Middleton-approved style, such as this tweed one from ModClothย or Boohoo’s Tie Belt Trim Cape. Theย Dorothy Perkins navy versionย comes with a hood and toggle closure, which totally gives us Balmoral vibes, as does Jealous Tomato’s traditional plaid one. Now if only we could get Duchess hairย to go along with it.ย
