The first film in the franchise focused on a couple who went Scuba diving and, when there was a mistake while taking a headcount on the boat of returned divers, the couple is left stranded in the ocean. The couple was left to struggle with fatigue, dehydration, starvation, and sharks looming below the surface.

Open Water 2: Adrift told the tale of a group of friends who went out for the afternoon on a yacht and all jumped into the water to enjoy the ocean. Unfortunately, nobody checked to make sure the ladder was down so that they could climb back onto the boat before jumping in, leaving the friends to try to find a way back onto the boat while also trying to stay above water.

MORE NEWS: ’47 Meters Down’ Swims More Than Sinks For A Summer Thriller

Earlier this summer, 47 Meters Down hit theaters, which had a similar premise to Open Water 3. When two sisters wanted to have an adventurous vacation, they made a last minute decision to go cage diving. After some of the equipment malfunctions, the two sisters plummet to the bottom of the ocean, out of range of any radio contact and with their oxygen limited, the duo is forced to either wait for help or explore the mysterious waters that would lead them to safety.

Another seminal shark exploitation film, Deep Blue Sea, was just announced to be receiving a sequel coming to Syfy. Considering the drastic differences in budgets from the first film to the upcoming installment, we shouldn’t expect to see Thomas Jane or LL Cool J reprise their roles, but we’ll see what happens when science intervenes in mother nature, only for mother nature to wreak havoc once again.

Open Water 3: Cage Dive will be in select theaters and on VOD August 11.
