It seems that every time we look up there’s another celebrity breakup or divorce (cough cough, Branjelina), so we can’t blame the Hollywood couples who never bothered to tie the knot.

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

Hawn and Russell have been together since the dawn of time — just kidding, since 1983. Both have been married before, and Hawn says they understand that the label of marriage doesn’t prove a bond. 

“I’ve been married twice,” she told Porter magazine. “Basically, once you’ve done it once, once you’ve done it twice and you realize that marriage, or the act of marrying, has nothing to do with the success.”

“A lasting relationship isn’t about marriage. It’s about compatibility and communication. And you both need to want it to work.”

“Intention is the key. It’s also about not losing yourself in each other. Being together, two pillars holding up the house and the roof, and being different, not having to agree on everything, learning how to deal with not agreeing. Everything’s a choice.”

Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham

Oprah told Access Hollywood that she would “leave this earth as a never-married woman.” She and Stedman Graham have been dating since 1986, but according to Oprah, if they would have gotten married, they wouldn’t be together anymore. 

“If you ever interviewed [Stedman], he would tell you that had we married, we would not be together today. Because he’s a traditional man and this is a very untraditional relationship.”

“I think it’s acceptable as a relationship, but if I had the title ‘wife,’ I think there would be other expectations for what a wife is and what a wife does. First of all, you’ve got to come home sometimes.”

Although the couple did get engaged in 1992, they later decided not to get married.

Winfrey also recently spoke out about why she never had children. “I didn’t want babies. I wouldn’t have been a good mom for babies,” she said. “I don’t have the patience. I have the patience for puppies, but that’s a quick stage!”

Ricky Gervais and Jane Fallon

Although this famous duo has been together since 1982, they never wed or had children. When asked why they never married, Gervais says he doesn’t “see the point” in it. “We are married for all intents and purposes…but there’s no point in us having an actual ceremony before the eyes of God because there is no God,” he said.

Don Cheadle and Bridgid Coulter

Although Cheadle and Coulter have been together since 1992 and have two kids together, they have no plans to tie the knot. The couple has never publicly discussed why they never wed, but considering that their children are almost fully grown, we suspect it’s because they’re perfectly happy the way things are.

Bo Derek and John Corbett

Despite their 15-year-old relationship Derek and Corbett decided not to marry. “Don’t get married,” Corbett once told a Huffington Post reporter. “I have a lot of friends that get divorces. It becomes this whole thing.”

“We talk about [marriage] sometimes, but we don’t have children and we’re not young, so there isn’t that pressure or need to get married,” Derek told Entertainment Tonight.

“I think the secret is just enjoy being together,” Corbett said.

Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova

Together since 2001, this famous couple is focusing on being good parents first. Iglesias also says that because he came from divorced parents, he’s a bit jaded on the subject.

“I’ve never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents, but I don’t think you love someone more because of a piece of paper,” he told Parade.

“Nowadays, it’s not taboo to have kids and not be married,” he explains. “What makes a difference is that you’re a good parent, period.”
