Although the theory may just be coincidental, Jay-Z alludes to the infamous scuffle on “Kill Jay Z,” the opening track on 4:44. “You egged Solange on / Knowin’ all along all you had to say you was wrong,” the MC raps.
The details of the fight remain unknown. However, Beyoncรฉ released Lemonade two years later and accused Jay-Z of cheating. Fans believe this may have been the reason for the scuffle.
Despite the newest theory, Jay-Z has addressed the name of the album before in an interview with The New York Times.
He said, “4:44 is a song that I wrote, and it’s the crux of the album, just right in the middle of the album. And I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 a.m., to write this song. So, it became the title of the album and everything. It’s the title track because it’s such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

In addition to his explanation, Beyoncรฉ and Jay-Z have been known to have a strong connection to the number four. The mother of three’s birthday is September 4 and Jay-Z’s is December 4. The two got married on April 4, and supposedly have matching “IV” (the roman numeral of four) tattoos on their ring fingers.
Beyoncรฉ has also released an album titled 4.
Jay-Z is following his wife’s suit when addressing the fight through lyrics. Beyoncรฉ sang about the situation on a 2014 remix of her song “Flawless.”
“We escalating, up in this b—h like elevators / Of course sometimes s–t go down when it’s a billion dollars on an elevator.”
