Netflix: Great Summer Movies and Shows Currently Streaming

Summer is in full swing, and when you’re trying to avoid the heat there’s nothing better pulling up Netflix and doing a little binge-watching.

But what do you watch? It can tough to choose with all the options available.

You can pretty much rule out winter holiday films because you’ll want to save those for later in the year.

Horror is great, but, for the most part, it’s better to save the scary stuff for fall.

Even with all the content that you rule out, there are still so many choices and it can get overwhelming. You just end up clicking around for 30 minutes and re-watching The Office again. (Which isn’t all that bad, really.)

‘Moana’

Released: 2016

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, Nicole Scherzinger and Jemaine Clement.

Synopsis: “The film tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a Polynesian tribe, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of saving her people.”

With all the music, and bright colors, and ocean theme, Moana is the perfect animated adventure to stream this summer.

‘Sharknado’

Released: 2013

Starring: Ian Ziering and Tara Reid.

Synopsis: “Sharknado is a 2013 made-for-television science fiction disaster horror comedy film about a waterspout that lifts sharks out of the ocean and deposits them in Los Angeles.”

When it comes to outlandish and absurd, you can’t get much better than Sharknado. This ridiculous flick is a perfect summertime watch.

‘Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp’

Released: 2015

Starring: Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine.

Synopsis: “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is a 2015 satirical comedy internet television series written by David Wain and Michael Showalter, and directed by Wain. The eight-episode Netflix series is a prequel to Wain’s 2001 film Wet Hot American Summer, a parody of teen sex comedies which has since developed a cult following.”

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is a hilarious absolute must-watch, but then go back and check out the Wet Hot American Summer movie. This will get you readily prepared for Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later.

‘Moonrise Kingdom’

Released: 2012

Starring: Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, and Bill Murray.

Synopsis: “The year is 1965, and the residents of New Penzance, an island off the coast of New England, inhabit a community that seems untouched by some of the bad things going on in the rest of the world. Twelve-year-olds Sam and Suzy have fallen in love and decide to run away. But a violent storm is approaching the island, forcing a group of quirky adults to mobilize a search party and find the youths before calamity strikes.”

Packed with a star-studded cast giving their most comedically dry performances, if you want a quality feel-good movie, then Moonrise Kingdom is exactly what you need.

‘The Andy Griffith Show’

Starring: Andy Griffith, Ron Howard, and Don Knotts.

You don’t need a synopsis of The Andy Griffith Show to what it’s about and why it’s the perfect summer show.

With over 200 episodes during its legendary 8-year-run, the down-home feel and “olden days” vibe of the show will almost make you feel cooler while you binge. Plus, it’s hundreds of hours with of content so you know it’ll last you the rest of the summer.
