‘American Horror Story’ Opening Sequence Returns in Season 7

One of the defining elements of American Horror Story has been not just its narrative or cast, but the distinct look and style of each season. A familiar element that was present in the first five seasons that helped establish that tone was the opening credits sequence, full of eerie music and macabre imagery that reminded viewers of each season’s unique theme. After its absence from Season 6, show creator Ryan Murphy revealed that the opening sequence would return this year, in addition to announcing when you can expect a title reveal.

Last year’s season was themed, “My Roanoke Nightmare,” documenting the terror of a couple who moved into a house that made them the victim of supernatural events. To tell this story, the style of the show took a slight deviation from the previous seasons, portraying the events in a reality television style. In order to more thoroughly sell this format, the show ditched the familiar opening sequence, which threw off many fans.

For those who want more information about Season 7, Murphy promised there would be more to learn on July 20.

It’s been well-known that the upcoming season would be themed around politics and that the events of the new season would kick off with 2016’s election night, but the official title for the story has yet to be confirmed. Considering previous seasons have had titles as simple as “Hotel” and “Coven,” we shouldn’t expect to learn too much information from the title, but the political theme could be made more clear with the title’s reveal.

The opening sequence isn’t the only familiar element of the series that will make its return this year, as Murphy teased earlier this week that Twisty, the terrifying clown from Season 5, would return to the upcoming season in some capacity.

Despite each different season giving audiences completely different stories, the self-contained nature of each season allows actors to return from one season to the next to play entirely new characters.

Both fresh and familiar faces can be expected to appear in the new season, with Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Billy Eichner, Billie Lourd, Cheyenne Jackson, Alison Pill, Colton Haynes and Adina Howard confirmed as cast members.
