This past week, Netflix revealed some major changes in the form of an updated corporate culture manifesto.

While some changes were technical aspects that matter to employees, and others were just wording issues, there were still plenty of things for subscribers of the service to notice.

Mainly, the new manifesto allows Netflix users to see how the company works on the inside, and what those who work for the streaming service are treated like on a daily basis.

Here are some of the big takeaways from the updated document, and what they tell us all about Netflix as a corporate company.

Netflix Isn’t Like Other Major Tech Companies

If you’ve ever seen the campuses of companies like Google or Facebook, you’re probably aware that the culture is one of fun and freedom. The tech giants have playgrounds, nap rooms, and all kinds of other goodies littered throughout their offices.

While Netflixย may be in Silicon Valley with those other companies, it’s culture is nothing like theirs.

This is what the new manifesto states:

“Our version of the great workplace is not comprised of sushi lunches, great gyms, big offices, or frequent parties. Our version of the great workplace is a dream team in pursuit of ambitious common goals, for which we spend heavily.”

That’s basically saying that Netflixย comes to work, and the employees of the company get things done.

Netflix Only Works With The Best

Part of the reason that Netflixย has become so productive is the fact that the company doesn’t mess around when it comes to the employees.

The manifesto states that the company shies away from hiring ‘brilliant jerks’, in a time when other tech companies seem to be filled with them.

“On a dream team, there are no ‘brilliant jerks.’ The cost to teamwork is just too high. Our view is that brilliant people are also capable of decent human interactions, and we insist upon that.”

That same manifesto also encourages employees to “be curious about how our different backgrounds affect us at work, rather than pretending they don’t affect us.”

“You recognize we all have biases, and work to grow past them,” the document states. “You intervene if someone else is being marginalized.”

This is a highly-inclusive culture, but it’s also highly-competitive. Only the best employees survive at Netflix.ย

“We focus on managers’ judgment through the ‘keeper test’ for each of their people: if one of the members of the team was thinking of leaving for another firm, would the manager try hard to keep them from leaving? Those that do not pass the keeper test (i.e. their manager would not fight to keep them) are promptly and respectfully given a generous severance package.”

Netflix Has A Lot Of Perks

While the culture of the company is competitive and hard-working, Netflixย does reward employees with some awesome benefits.

For example, people who work at Netflixย get unlimited vacation time and expenses. Employees can take off whenever they need, but they’re also expected to put in extra hours whenever they’re needed.ย

“Frankly, we intermix work and personal time quite a bit, doing email at odd hours, taking off weekday afternoons for kids’ games, etc.”

The company also feels the same about parental leave.

“New parents are encouraged to take whatever time they feel is right in the first year, which they generally aren’t sure of until a few months after the baby arrives.”

These updates are great for employees, but they’re also helpful for subscribers to see how everything works. It’s nice to know that you’re sending $10 every month to a company that treats its people the way you’d like to be treated.ย
