Netflix Has Added More Subscribers Than Cable, But There’s A Catch

Netflix is continuing to grow at a rapid pace, and it’s taking down some of the biggest companies in the industry.

When you break down the numbers from Q1 of 2017, the streaming service has added more subscribers than all of the major cable companies combined.

According to the Leichtman Research Group, the biggest cable companies in the United States gained 408,059 subscribers in Q1. That’s the total between Comcast, Charter, Altice, Mediacom, Cable ONE, DIRECTV, DISH, Verizon Fios, AT&T U-verse, Frontier, Sling TV, DIRECTV NOW, and Cox.

On the other hand, according to CNN, Netflix gained over 5 million subscribers in that same time period.

That’s over 10 times the amount of subscribers that cable companies added.

Here’s The Catch

While those numbers are astounding, they are slightly skewed. 

Those cable companies do service the majority of people in the country, but there are still plenty of folks who use smaller or local providers. There is likely a large chunk of cable growth that was left off of that list.

The other major factor here, is the fact that those numbers only counted cable companies in the United States. Netflix’s growth, on the other hand, was on a global scale. 

The 5 million subscribers that were added to the service in Q1 came from all over the world. 

When you look at it that way, it tells a slightly different story. Netflix likely grew more than cable in the US, but there’s no way to tell for sure with those numbers. It’s not exactly fair to put a global count up against one country.

Netflix Cancelled Original Series

While Netflix original shows may have seemed indestructible, this year has shown everyone just how false that theory is.

The streaming giant made waves earlier this year when it announced that Baz Luhrman’s The Get Down had been cancelled after one season. The show was praised by critics for it’s enticing characters and artistic vision, but it still got the axe.

Not long after that, Netflix also pulled the plug on Sense8, the diverse sci-fi series from the creators of The Matrix. Despite multiple petitions from fans, Netflix stood its ground.

These announcements come on the heels of a few other original series’ that were either cancelled, or asked to end, by Netflix.

Shows like Longmire, Hemlock Grove, Lilyhammer, Marco Polo, The Killing, and Bloodline have all seen their end over the last couple of years. 

Despite the wave of cancellations, the streaming service still has plenty of great shows that are still going strong.
