While many were shocked that NBC’s Hannibal was canceled after three seasons, despite its passionate fan base and rave reviews, many were surprised that the show got three seasons in the first place, considering the violence on display week after week. After having pursued many other projects in the two years since the series’ cancellation, creator Bryan Fuller recently revealed on Twitter that discussions about reviving the series are currently taking place.
Conversations couldn’t start until 2 years after the final airing of season 3. @neoprod has started those conversations. This takes time.

Almost immediately after word came out about the show’s cancellations, talks of bringing the show to another network or a streaming service were underway. Considering the finale aired on June 22, 2015, The De Laurentiis Company has begun those conversations about what to do with the property.

Since the show’s end, Fuller has kept busy working on Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods, but that hasn’t prevented him from brainstorming where he saw Hannibal going in any future projects.
While on the Post Mortem podcast, Fuller explained, “I have conversations with (Hannibal executive producer) Martha De Laurentiis.” He continued, “I have conversations with [stars] Mads [Mikkelson] and Hugh [Dancy]. We’re are all excited about the prospect of returning to the story. There’s some hurdles to get throughโฆ [But] I just had a great idea for season 4. There’s an interesting next chapter in the relationship between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter that would be fascinating to unpack. I’ve shared it with the gentlemen and they’re both keen on it.”
Mikkelsen and Dancy have already expressed interest in being involved in the continuation of the characters, but expressing interest is far from confirmation of involvement.
In addition to Fuller moving on to bigger projects, Mikkelsen has also become a highly sought-after performer, having starred in both Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016 alone. Although this doesn’t mean we’ll see him star in future installments in either franchise, it’s evidence of how far he’s come since starring as Hannibal Lecter.
There are many details about what the future holds for Hannibal, but don’t be surprised to hear that the story will continue in some way, shape, or form.
