Tyler Perry's Next Netflix Movie Reveals Trailer: See Kerry Washington in 'The Six Triple Eight'

'The Six Triple Eight' will release in theaters on dec. 6 before debuting on Netflix on Dec. 20.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Tyler Perry's upcoming wartime drama The Six Triple Eight. Based on Kevin M. Hymel's article "Fighting A Two-Front War," published in WWII History Magazine by Sovereign Media, and inspired "the first and only Women's Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII," per an official synopsis, The Six Triple Eight stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams and is set to hit theaters on Dec. 6 before its debut on the streamer later that month.

Released on Wednesday, Aug. 28, the trailer sees Washington's character telling a battalion of women soldiers that they "must be perfect. You do not have the luxury to be good; you have the burden to be better." As her all-women unit goes through grueling training, she tells them, "I need women who had to fight to survive." The trailer later shows her telling the unit, "I am giving you my best, and you will give me yours. A lot of people do not want us to succeed. We have the most to prove. Welcome to the Women's Army Corp."

Per the official synopsis, "despite facing racism and sexism – and grueling working conditions – they were committed to serving their country with honor and distinction. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers."

Sharing the trailer on X, Perry reflected on the importance of the story, writing, "you have no idea what it means to me to have been given the grace and the blessing to be able to tell THIS story! Every detail is dedicated to the memory of the 855 black women and women of color of the Six Triple Eight. When America needed hope, they delivered!"

Washignton, meanwhile, told PEOPLE that she is "really so proud" to be a part of the film, adding that Perry "has done an extraordinary job taking this largely untold story and adapting it into a moving narrative work of art that allows you into the hearts and minds of these brave American heroes." She said the movie "resonates with audiences so strongly because although it is a historical drama, the themes in the film are still very relevant today."

Along with Washington, the film stars Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Donna Biscoe, Gregg Sulkin, Scott Daniel Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, and Oprah Winfrey. Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, Carlota Espinosa join Perry as producers, with Peter Guber and Washington serving as co-executive producers.

The Six Triple Eight premieres in select theaters on Dec. 6 and will debut on Netflix on Dec. 20.
