With the announcement this year that Ellen DeGeneres is mounting a return to stand-up by filming her first special in several years for Netflix, a new light is turned to the quality of stand-up comedy the streaming juggernaut stamps their name to.
In reality, though, Netflix has been putting a huge emphasis on stand-up comedy for a long time.
From the very first one, Bill Burr's You People Are All the Same way back in 2012, to the recent special from Sarah Silverman, A Speck of Dust, Netflix has given comedians from all levels of notoriety the opportunity to pour our their creativity without the stiffling restrictions they get from cable TV networks.
That commitment has paid off too.
Recently, Netflix launched two new specials from Dave Chappelle that have been massively successful. Dubbed the Dave Chappelle: Collection 1, it has become the most watched Netflix comedy special of all-time.
The hits just keep on coming too, as next month Netflix will drop a small handful of new comedy specials that are certain to have fans rolling on the floor in laughter.
Scroll down to see what the new Netflix original comedy specials are coming in September.
Jerry Before Seinfeld
Premiere Date: September 19th
Jerry Seinfeld is most well-known for his iconic sitcom, Seinfeld. Spanning 180 episodes over nine seasons, the 1990s series has already sealed it's place as one of the greatest TV shows of all-time.
The series focused on Seinfeld and his friends George Costanza (played by Jason Alexander) and Elaine Benes (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), as well as his neighbor across the hall Cosmo Kramer (played by Michael Richards). Every episode was a small window into the hilariously neurotic lives the four of them led.
Before the show, and afterward for that matter, Jerry Seinfeld stands atop a legacy of his world-class stand-up comedy. Next month, Seinfeld returns to the stage in his special Jerry Before Seinfeld which sees the comedian get back to his roots.prevnext
