Jim Carrey Reveals His Secret Passion for Art in New Documentary

Jim Carrey is best known for his long acting career, which includes his beloved comedic work in Ace Ventura and In Living Color and dramatic roles in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Man on the Moon. However, Carrey’s talents also extend into another medium: art.

In a new short-form documentary, Carrey opens up about his passion and shows off his surprisingly impressive paintings.

The six-minute film, entitled Jim Carrey: I Needed Color, is available to stream on Vimeo and shows the actor at work in his home studio. Throughout the clip, Carrey opens up about channeling his sadness into art.

“I found myself looking around at one point during a really bleak winter in New York, and it was just so depressing. I think I needed color,” he says. “When I really started painting a lot, I had become so obsessed that there was nowhere to move in my home. Paintings were everywhere. They were becoming part of the furniture. I was eating on them.”

He reveals that he started drawing when he was a child, but never really carried his creativity into the paint medium. Then, when he was dealing with a break-up (presumably the end of his relationship with Jenny McCarthy), he decided to try it out.

“I sketched all the time, but I didn’t do a lot of painting,” he admits. “About six years ago, when I was trying to heal a broken heart I decided, ‘Well, maybe I’ll paint.’”

Carrey also dives into his thoughts on love and why he likes drawing visages of Jesus Christ.
