Disney and Pixar have tapped Josh Cooley to join John Lasseter as Toy Story 4’s co-director.
Cooley comes in-house in from Pixar, having served as the head of story on this summer’s upcoming Pixar film, Inside Out. Most recently, he just finished directing an additional short story set in the Inside Out universe that will debut with the film’s Blu-Ray release.

“To be co-director on ‘Toy Story 4’ with John, who brought the ‘Toy Story’ characters to the screen 20 years ago, is a dream come true,” Cooley told Variety. “When I first saw ‘Toy Story’ I was amazed by the groundbreaking computer-generated animation. But it was the strong storytelling that kept me coming back. ‘Toy Story 4’ will continue that tradition and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it!”
As ComicBook.com reported last week, Toy Story will not continue the narrative told in the original Toy Story trilogy, but will instead feature a different story that will resemble a romantic comedy.
Toy Story 4 opens on June 16, 2017.
