A woman from Connecticut was killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident, but managed to push her daughter out of the way before the vehicle made impact.

The accident occurred when Dania Cegeno-Delrosario (40) and her daughter Denisse (7) were crossing a street on Friday night in Meriden.

Denisse reported to the police that her mother pushed her to safety when she saw the vehicle approaching.

Denisse told WFSB, “We were walking and there was nothing coming.” Next thing Denisse knew, she explained that they were being hit by the car and “it pushed both of us, but it pushed her very hard.”

The 7-year-old girl then ran into her home to tell her grandmother what happened. She said, “My mom’s under a jeep, a white Jeep, and someone crashed her.”

After finding Cegeno-Delrosario beneath the vehicle, neighbor Giuseppe Capparella reported the crime to the police.

“I heard a kid scream and it sounded like my own daughter,” Capparella reported to the Record-Journal. “She just kept saying, ‘Mommy’s dead, mommy’s dead.’”

A spokesman for the family explained that the Cegeno-Delrosario was then taken to the local hospital. She later died from head and neck injuries sustained in the accident.

According to People, Cegeno-Delrosario had two jobs and was working as a travel agent during the day and cared for the elderly at night.

The motorist that struck Cegeno-Delrosario allegedly fled the scene. The authorities are searching for the driver of the white Jeep. However, a side mirror found at the site of the crash indicates that the vehicle might actually be a Nissan.

We commend Cegeno-Delrosario for her remarkable bravery, and offer our condolences to her family.
