Muhammad Ali Biopic With Will Smith Returning To Theaters

In light of the recent passing of boxing legend, Muhammad Ali, Sony pictures has decided to bring back to theaters Michael Mann's "Ali" starring Will Smith. Rory Bruer, President of Sony Worldwide Distrubution stated, "With the passing of Muhammad Ali, we have received many requests for this film to return to theaters, in celebration of his life." In response to the fan's requests, the film will return to theaters this weekend.

The 2001 film focuses on Ali's younger days and on his illustrious career in the boxing ring. Will Smith portrays the title character Muhammad Ali while other cast members include Jamie Foxx, Jon Voight, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jeffrey Wright, Mario Van Peebles, and Nona Gaye. 'Ali' was nominated for two Oscars including a best actor nomination for Will Smith and best supporting actor nomination for Jon Voight, who portrays journalist Howard Cosell.

At age 74, Muhammad Ali passed away on June 3 at a medical facility in Arizona. Spokesperson for Ali's family, Bob Gunnell, stated the cause of death was "septic shock due to unspecified natural causes."

In regards to bringing the film back to theatres, Rory Bruer also mentioned, "The film truly honors everything that made Ali one of the central figures of our time, a man who commanded our sport but whose personal faith and principles made him mean so much more."

'Ali' will be making its return to hundreds of theaters across the U.S. on the same weekend the funeral services will be held for Muhammad Ali in Louisville, Kentucky. Bill Clinton, Billy Crystal, and Bryant Gumbel are expected to deliver eulogies at the public service followed by a private burial.
