Check Out What The Critics Are Saying About ‘The Mummy’

The new iteration of The Mummy is set to hit theaters on June 9, and it’s finally time for the fans to see how the critics felt.

As the reviews pass through, it’s easy to see that this is a divisive movie. Some people think it’s a ton of fun, while a plenty couldn’t stand it.

Starring Tom Cruise, The Mummy is set to begin the entire Dark Universe of monster films from Universal. The problem that many of these critics had was the fact that the film tried too hard to set the tone for the movies of the future.

Despite some supposed flaws, it seems to be a pretty fun popcorn movie. Our own Kofi Outlaw watched The Mummy, and he thought there was definitely a couple of reasons to head to the theater.

Here are some of the more notable reviews for The Mummy.

The Hollywood Reporter

John DeFore of The Hollywood reporter aired on the side of the negative with his review. He felt that the movie wasn’t a great introduction to the newly-minted Dark Universe, and that it felt pretty lackluster.

“Sure, it’s hard to muster anything like desire for another Dark Universe flick after seeing this limp, thrill-free debut. But who knows? Maybe shifting gears to a female protagonist in 2019’s Bride of Frankenstein will do the trick.”

The Verge

Tasha Robinson, from The Verge, was a little more optimistic about the film. While The Mummy was definitely flawed, the fun moments were able to shine through.

“The Mummy is a relatively functional creature-feature movie, packed with oversized action sequences. But it reminds viewers at every turning point that it isn’t a story so much as a prologue, a brand-deposit setup meant to whet their appetites for more Dark Universe. The approach may pay off in the long run, but in the short term, it feels like sitting down for a movie, and getting a feature-length trailer instead.”

Indiewire

Big budget blockbusters don’t often fare well with Indiewire, and The Mummy is no exception. David Ehrlich used his review to totally bash the monster movie.

In fact, the title of the piece calls The Mummy ‘The Worst Tom Cruise Movie Ever’.

“It’s not that it’s bad, it’s that it never could have been good. It’s an irredeemable disaster from start to finish, an adventure that entertains only via glimpses of the adventure it should have been. It’s the kind of movie that Tom Cruise became a household name by avoiding at all costs.”

IGN

Daniel Krupa was also very down on The Mummy, saying that the film got more boring the throughout. He states that the intrigue is completely missing, and that the movie itself is exhausting.

“I never thought I’d get bored of watching Tom Cruise run in a movie. Yet The Mummy is so relentless and exhausting, and lacking in genuine intrigue, that by its final third I was struggling to find joy even in Tom’s pleasing gait.”

Variety

While Owen Gleiberman wasn’t quite as negative as the previous two critics, he still wasn’t very high on The Mummy. His opening statement noted that the film was “too busy to be much fun.”

“The new ‘Mummy,’ you may be surprised to hear, doesn’t have a whole lot of show-stopping visual flimflam up its sleeve. Instead, it’s built around a chancy big trick.”
