On weekend without a major blockbuster to dominate theaters, The Hitman’s Bodyguard has seized the opportunity to claim the top spot at the box office.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard, an action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, will make a $21 million in its opening weekend at the box office after taking in $8 million on Friday from 3,377 locations. That opening is on the higher end of expectations for the buddy-comedy but the film is still one of the lowest opening weekends for a first place finish in 2017. The Hitman’s Bodyguard casts Reynolds as a bodyguard hired to protect one of the most dangerous men in the world, played by Jackson.

Last week’s first place winner, Annabelle: Creation, slides down to second place. The prequel to The Conjuring should earn $15.5 million in its second weekend after earning $5 million on Friday from 3,542 locations. The success of Annabelle: Creation, which is the fourth film in The Conjuring franchise and the second film to be headlined by Annabelle, has officially turned The Conjuring universe into a $1 billion franchise for Warner Bros.
Logan Lucky is looking at a third-place finish for its opening weekend. Despite an all-star ensemble cast that includes Channing Tatum, Daniel Craig, Seth MacFarlane, Sebastian Stan, and Hillary Swank, the Steven Soderbergh film earned less than $3 million on Friday from 3,031 locations and is expected to earn less than $9 million over the weekend despite critical praise.
In its fifth weekend at the box office, Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama Dunkirk moved to fourth place. Dunkirk earned $2 million from 3,271 locations on Friday and is set to earn just under $7 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s total up over $165 million.
Rounding out the top five this week is animated comedy The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature. In its second frame, The Nut Job 2 earned $1.5 million from 4,003 locations on Friday, setting the film up for a weekend total just under $6 million.
Filling out the top 10 at the box office this weekend are animated comedy The Emoji Movie, Marvel Studios’ latest superhero saga Spider-Man: Homecoming, live-action comedy Girls Trip (which has now passed the $100 million domestic mark), the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and Wind River.

West Virginia family man Jimmy Logan teams up with his one-armed brother Clyde and sister Mellie to steal money from the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Jimmy also recruits demolition expert Joe Bang to help them break into the track’s underground system. Complications arise when a mix-up forces the crew to pull off the heist during a popular NASCAR race while also trying to dodge a relentless FBI agent.

At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.
