'Fate of the Furious' Director Is Down for Jason Statham and The Rock Spinoff

The Fast and the Furious franchise has its fair share of bonafide stars, with two of the most recent additions, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham, quickly becoming fan favorites. Considering the chemistry between the two performers and events of The Fate of the Furious, the film's director, F. Gary Gray, revealed his thoughts on the two characters getting their own film on a recent Blu-ray commentary track.

Of the two performers' dynamic in the film, Gray explained, "You could just feel the energy between the two. I think something's going to come out of it, you know? We'll see, but I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a two-hander between Shaw (Statham) and Hobbs (Johnson)."

The film sees Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) being manipulated to turn on his allies, which forces them to turn to unlikely adversaries that provide the skills they need to take Toretto down. The film concluded with Hobbs and Shaw setting aside the animosity they had towards one another after recognizing the course of events that led them down their respective paths, ready to embrace one another for who they were deep down.

Before the characters came to that conclusion, they were forced to confront one another as inmates of a maximum security prison, both by trading insults and attempting to engage in fisticuffs. Gray cited this sequence as the proof-of-concept for the spin-off film.

"What we were going for besides hell in a cage, we were going for two different fighting styles," the director revealed of the sequence. "This parkour approach that Jason Statham is displaying is showing how he's really dangerous yet, it's not choreographed, it's just something kind of dangerously elegant about what he's doing with his parkour approach to kicking the s**t out of everyone."

He continued, "This guy is real precise, which is completely the opposite to what The Rock's doing. He has this kind of Godzilla thing where it's all brute force and he's just going to walk through the wall. He's not doing anything elegant, he's just going to remove anything or anyone in his way."

Despite the recent film's financial success, Fate of the Furious earned the lowest score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes since 2009's Fast & Furious. Much of the criticism came from the devoted fans who were upset that, in a franchise devoted to the idea of family, a character like Hobbs could embrace Shaw, having previously killed teammate Han in a previous film.
