Zack Snyder's 'Dawn of The Dead' Originally Featured Zombie Dogs

Fresh off the announcement that Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake would be getting a deluxe collector's edition Blu-ray release, Dread Central revisited an interview which revealed that a scene involving zombie dogs was written, but unfortunately never came to fruition.

While actress Jenna Fischer was speaking to C.H.U.D. back in 2007, she revealed the details of the scene from James Gunn's script, whom she was married to at the time.

"There was a scene from Dawn of the Dead that didn't get shot. It was a brilliant zombie dog scene, but it was too expensive," the actress confessed. "Basically, the guys send their dog out to get guns from the guy across the street. They had a lot of dogs from the pet store in the mall that they were sending over, and all the people are on the roof watching and are going, 'It's working! It's working! The dogs are coming back!' And all of a sudden there's a rumble, like thunder, and a horde of zombie dogs descend upon the living dogs and start ripping them apart. Only one dog makes it back with guns."

Considering the remake didn't seem to spare any expense when it came to zombie effects, it's tough to say how it could have been too expensive to make.

It is possible, however, that with Resident Evil having been released only two years prior, which also featured zombie dogs, that this scene was cut as to avoid any similarities between the two films.

With Gunn now being mostly known for creating the Guardians of the Galaxy films, many audiences are completely unaware of his history with darker subject matter. One of his big breaks came when he began working with Troma, an independent movie studio known for its incredibly absurd and ambitious genre films.

In addition to doing horror films like Dawn of the Dead and Slither, the filmmaker also scripted the two Scooby-Doo movies.

Another interesting point in the 2007 interview with Fischer is that she mentions a little bit about their home life and a project Gunn was working on at the time.

When asked about whether or not she'd be interested in starring in a horror movie, Fisher explained that being married to Gunn was "enough darkness." She added, "We often sit at dinner and discuss new interesting ways to kill people."

She also pointed out, "He wrote a movie that I think he's not going to make, but I don't want to give it away and it has a great death scene in it."

With the first film he wrote to get made after the interview being Super, it's possible that's the film in which she was referring to, or it's possible we've yet to see the film with the "great death scene."
