Normal weight and even overweight kids and teenagers have a more positive view of their bodies than in past years. But don't get excited. It's not necessarily a good thing.

According to Fox News, a new study has shown that more than a third of overweight 13 to 15- year-olds consider their weight to be normal and don't worry about health concerns.

It raises a valid issue: Is it more important for kids to feel good about their bodies or for them to be at a healthy weight?

Ultimately, health is something that shouldn't be taken lightly, and being at a healthier weight would more than likely only serve to improve their self image. But does that mean they need some tough love?

According to one health expert, "Overweight teenagers are more likely to become over weight adults at higher risk of cancer. So it's important that young people who are too heavy have support to make healthy changes. Being aware that they are above a healthy weight could be a first step."

There are numerous health issues associated with being overweight such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, cancer, gout, breathing problems and asthma according to WebMD.

If kids aren't even aware that they are overweight and that being overweight is a problem, they are potentially setting themselves up for serious side effects of obesity down the road, or sooner.

According to healthiergeneration.org, roughly 1 in 3 kids is overweight or obese. It's a huge problem. A problem that needs to be fixed and obviously can't be fixed by kids and teens alone.

Parents, that's where you can help. Try making it a family effort.

Ways to Combat Childhood and Teen Obesity

  • Limit television and media time
  • Make goals of swapping out unhealthy food with healthier options
  • Physical activity- even walking daily is a start!
  • Decrease portion sizes to eliminate excess
  • Eliminate sugary beverages to cut unnecessary calories

It's important for teens to make changes now for a healthier, happier lifestyle in the future.
