Matthew McConaughey Expresses Interest In Returning To 'True Detective'

Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey has expressed interest in reprising his True Detective role as homicide detective, Rust Cohle. The character garnered massive critical acclaim for the 46-year-old actor when the 8-episode HBO show aired in 2014.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching 'True Detective' on Sunday nights. I was happy when we made that for six months, because I was on my own island," stated McConaughey while on the Rich Eisen Show.

Audiences would undoubtedly be thrilled for a third season involving McConaughey reprising his role as Rust Cohle, and if co-star Woody Harrelson agreed to return in order to portray Rust Cohle's partner, Marty Hart. The second season of the Nic Pizzolatto crime drama included an entirely new cast set in Los Angeles starring Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachael McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, and Kelly Reilly.

While the first season received vast critical praise, the second season was not quite as appealing in the opinion of audiences and critics alike. "Critics were not so kind to Pizzolatto's second effort, which featured a new slate of worthy actors whose talents were overshadowed by a cumbersome plot, inexplicably long shots of Los Angeles highways and an unrelenting somber tone."

The return of McConaughey and Harrelson would likely be very well-received and could possibly bring the show back into the good graces of critics and audiences after a sub par second season. When asked about the conditions upon returning to the character, McConaughey stated, "It would have to be the right context, the right way." He continued, "That thing - when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rust Cohle, I'm in."

Fingers crossed that Pizzolatto can come up with another script reminiscent of season 1 of 'True Detective' so that we can once again see Matthew McConaughey portray the eccentric detective Rust Cohle.
