Ron Howard, Cary Elwes, Stephen King and Others Mourn Rob Reiner and His Wife Michele

Hollywood is paying tribute to legendary director and actor Rob Reiner after he and his wife Michele were killed Sunday in their home.

As the son of writer Carl Reiner, Rob first entered the spotlight on All in the Family, on which he played Mike, before going on to direct classics including Stand by Me, This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sallyโ€ฆ, The Princess Bride and A Few Good Men.

Following Rob and Michele’s deaths at 78 and 68, respectively, many of the director’s friends and colleagues took to social media to mourn the shocking loss. Keep reading for some of the tributes.

Ron Howard

“Our careers and lives intersected often over the decades from Rob writing the pilot script for Happy Days and then as we each shifted from acting careers into directing and producing,” wrote director Ron Howard. “He proved to be a superlative filmmaker, a supportive colleague and at all times a dedicated citizen.”

Howard continued, “Rob will be missed on so many levels. My heart goes out to his family and his many close friends.”

Jerry O’Connell

“Love you, Rob,’ actor Jerry O’Connell wrote alongside a photo of himself with Rob on the set of Stand By Me.

Stephen King

“Iโ€™m horrified and saddened by the death of Rob Reiner and Michele. Wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker (including 2 of mine),” wrote Stand By Me and Misery author Stephen King. “Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me.”

Cary Elwes

Rob’s Princess Bride leading man, Cary Elwes, posted a photo on social media of their chairs from the set with the caption, โ€œNo wordsโ€ฆโ€

Ben Stiller

“What a huge loss,” actor and director Ben Stiller wrote. “Rob Reiner was one of my favorite directors. He made some of the most formative movies for my generation. He came out form behind a huge comedic shadow of the great Carl Reiner and being a tv actor to being a a great director who made an incredible run of movies. Spinal Tap is one of the best comedies ever made – and the list goes on.”

“He was a kind caring person who was really really funny,” Stiller continued. “I didnโ€™t know him well but was always a fan and I feel a real sadness for those who did, and his family.”

Paul Feig

“One of my most cherished pictures,” director Paul Feig wrote alongside a photo with Rob at San Diego Comic-Con. “Rob was my true hero. A true visionary titan and a lovely lovely person.”

“One never knows if itโ€™s proper to post during something as tragic as this,” he continued. “But I just want the world to know what so many of us know in the industry. Rob was the best.”
