Hollywood and longtime fans are shocked by the accidental drowning death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner. The Cosby Show alum died on July 20 at the age of 54 while vacationing in Costa Rica with his family.
He’d been hosting a podcast, Not All Hood, about mental health in Black Americans, which launched last year, while remaining an in-demand actor. Warner starred in two 2024 episodes of 9-1-1.

He opened up about the emotionally charged episode in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Initially, he said he thought has signing up to portray the villain.
“That really intrigued me,” he said at the time of getting to play the bad guy. “And I’d never done a show where I’ve had to wear a prosthetic, so it felt like this was something that would definitely take me out of my comfort zone, and I thought that was exciting.”
Instead, he ended up playing Amir, a man who lost his wife a decade ago in the fire Bobby (Peter Krause) accidentally set. He now works as a traveling nurse and wears the scars of that tragedy on his face and on his heart.
Of Amir’s transition from a villain to a hero of sorts, he said it was a collaborative effort. “I think what really came out was tapping into his humanity. You have this guy who is, because of his own experience, a healer of sorts,” he told the publication. “He’s the guy that’s helping everyone else — easing their suffering as a way to ease his suffering. He’s on this track with his humanity, but then he’s suddenly faced with all of this anger and resentment that he’s built up for all of these years. That made for an interesting experience, in having to face our own demons.”
Warner leaves behind a young daughter, and a wife. He never publicly named his family.
