September is finally here and you know what that means! It’s now almost time for the Chicago Universe to return to NBC.
Later this month, both Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. will be premiering on the network, marking their sixth and fifth seasons, respectively.

Chicago P.D. is the first of the shows to come back on the air, debuting its new season on Wednesday, September 27 at 10 p.m. The Season 5 premiere will be titled, “Reform.”
Chicago Fire will return to TV just 24 hours after P.D. On September 28, fans can tune in to “It Wasn’t Enough” to find out who survived the cliffhanger in last season’s finale.
That seems like a long time to wait for more, but NBC is helping curb your appetite with some important episodes in the meantime.
September Reruns
Since the good folks at NBCย know that everyone is beyond ready for new episodes, the network is using the weeks leading up the premieres to get everybody prepared.
On September 14, the first September episode of Chicago Fire airs. NBCย will rerun the episode titled “Telling Her Goodbye,” which you’ll remember as the time when Firehouse 51 was taken over by gang members.
One week later, on September 21, the network will air “My Miracle.” This episode is the season finale that ended with the terror of seeing many of the main characters trapped inside a burning building, with no way out.
That finale will lead right into the Season 6 premiere of Chicago Fire, just one week later.
The biggest thing to remember here is that all of these episodes are on a new night for Chicago Fire. The series is moving to 10 p.m. on Thursday nights.
What About ‘Med’ and ‘Justice?’
There has been plenty of talk about both Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D., but no one has been mentioning the other two series in the Chicago line-up.
As far as Chicago Justice is concerned, there’s sadly nothing else to watch. NBC cancelled the show earlier this summer. While the show is gone, some of the stars will be moving on to other programs in the franchise. Jon Seda is returning to P.D. as a series regular, while Philip Winchester will have a substantial role on Law & Order: SVU.
Now for the good news! Chicago Med is still going strong but it won’t be airing right away. The show will premiere sometime in the midseason.
Hopefully there will be enough Fire and P.D. to carry the load through September.
What to Expect
While both Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. have established characters and stories, both were start with some pretty major shake-ups when they return.
As we already talked about, Chicago Fire ended with a big cliffhangerย as Season 5 came of a close. Many of the firefighters of House 51 were trapped in an explosive fire and no one is sure who made it out. Showrunnerย Derek Haas didn’t explicitly say that someone was going to die, but he did reveal that at least one character will be leaving in some way.
Over on P.D., there are two big changes to look out for this year. First and foremost, the show is facing the massive departure of Sophia Bush. After starring as Detective Erin Lindsay for four seasons, Bush has left ahead of the premiere.
Secondly, P.D. has a new showrunnerย in Rick Eid. The new boss has promised that the upcoming season will be more rooted in real-life issues facing the people of Chicago.
