Fans have known that every season of American Horror Story takes place in the same timeline, but no one expected the tales to have such a deep, hellish connection.
This week, creator Ryan Murphy posted a list of the nine circles of hell to his Instagram account. The interesting part is that he paired seven of these nine levels with the seasons of AHS.

If Murphy’s note is the true connection, it means that every single season of American Horror Story represents another layer of hell.
The first season (Murder House) supposedly represents limbo, the place between Earth and hell. This makes sense, seeing as how the house in that season acted as a bridge between the dead and the living.

The other seasons that have already aired were given corresponding levels of hell, and they all seemed to match up with the main themes of those seasons.
Cult, the upcoming seventh installment, was matched up with Heresy. This aligns with the political theme that Murphy has teased for the season.
American Horror Story has already been renewed for its eighth and ninths seasons, so it would stand to reason that the show will end after those, completing the circles of hell. The final two seasons are presumably set to be the representations of Violence and Lust.

While interesting, this could just be a fan theory that Murphy enjoyed reading about. He captioned the photo with the word “Interesting” making it seem like this might not have been his idea.
American Horror Story: Cult airs on September 5 at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
