'Grey's Anatomy' Spin-Off Finds Its First Star

The Grey's Anatomy spinoff is starting to gain its first cast members.

The new series landed its first female lead, Rosewood vet Jaina Lee Ortiz. The actress signed on to the series and is set to make her debut via backdoor pilot in one of Grey's Anatomy's fall episodes before the show's launch midseason, E! News reports.

ABC nor Shondaland have confirmed that Ortiz will star as the show's female lead, however the still-untitled spinoff's directing executive producer Paris Barclay revealed the casting news on Twitter, writing, "She's our star!"

The series, which was announced during ABC's 2017 Upfronts presentation in May, will center on firefighters in a Seattle firehouse, following the brave men and women who risk their lives in the line of duty and off the clock.

Fellow executive producers Stacy McKee, Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes will join Barclay.

"No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey's' signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff," ABC President Channing Dungey said at the time.

Ortiz starred on two seasons of Rosewood, as well as USA Network's Shooter and the new comedy film Girls Trip.
