Either the WWE’s social media team has accidentally let the cat out of the bag or a Ruthless Aggression era star is getting the weakest return promo of any former star in the company. Yesterday on Twitter, WWE made posted a link to a video that promoted Shelton Benjamin’s most insane moves. While WWE posting a video about a former star is not enough to raise the red flag, it was the small type below the video that has some wrestling fans buzzing.
At the bottom of the tweet it says “Before Shelton Benjamin returns to SmackDown Live”. A click on the tweet goes directly to a video of Shelton’s highlights, but there is no mention of his return. It’s highly likely whoever is running WWE’s social media didn’t notice the leaked info since they weren’t linking to an article.

In June, Pro Wrestling Sheet’s Ryan Satin, reported that Shelton Benjamin was close to signing a WWE contract; one that would place him on the Blue Brand’s Tuesday nights.

About this time last year, Benjamin entered talks to join SmackDown after the original brand split. Things were so imminent that WWE aired a vignette on Smackdown in order to promote the Gold Standard’s return. However, before anything was finalized it was revealed that Benjamin was significantly injured.
A few days later, we found out that he needed shoulder surgery and would be out for a considerable amount of time.
Benjamin was last seen in WWE 2010. He owns 3 Intercontinental Title reigns along with 2 turns as a Tag Team Champion and 1 run with the US Title. Benjamin quickly established himself as one of the company’s most gifted in-ring workers, earning the reputation being one of the most underrated performers in WWE.

Benjamins’s high-octane style may be better aligned with today’s WWE product. Similar acts like AJ Styles and Finn Balor find themselves at the top of WWE’s card today. 10 years ago, perhaps, these guys would have slipped into relative obscurity as WWE held such an infatuation with bigger athletes.
Whether WWE meant to let this info slip or not, it seems clear that it’s only a matter of time before the former US Champion finds his way back to Tuesday nights. With the US Title currently around AJ Styles’ waist, we can’t wait to see what plans might lie ahead.
