The sixth episode of Game of Thrones‘ seventh season showed Jon Snow and some allies venture north of the Wall to retrieve an wight, or rather a zombie, to use as proof of the White Walker threat. They plan to take it to King’s Landing to convince Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen to place a temporary ceasefire on their war in order to combat the dead together.

They retrieve the wight, but are about to be overwhelmed by the Night King’s forces.

But then Daenerys and her dragons swoop in to save the day, taking out swaths of the dead army with mad fire-breathing skills. Yet just when it appeared that the living might escape with only one casualty, the Night King took an ice spear and aimed to the sky toward Viserion, one of Daenerys’ dragons.

The blow struck him in the neck in a fiery explosion, and the dragon crashed down to the ice below, crashing through and sinking to the bottom of the lake. Daenerys could only watch as one of her children died, helpless as Viserion fell to icy depths.

Drogon took flight and barely missed another of the Night King’s ice spears. The remaining two dragons and Daenerys rescued most of the crew and returned to Eastwatch after suffering a devastating blow.

The episode ended with the Night King’s forces dragging Viserion’s dead body from the bottom of the lake. When they pull the dragon up, the Night King placed his hand on Viserion’s head, beckoning him back to life as the latest member of his dead army.

Viserion’s lids fluttered open, revealing icy blue eyes.

So now the Night King has one of Daenerys’ dragons and a means to get past the Wall. While Jon Snow’s mission might have gotten them the means to unite the armies of Westeros against the Night King, they might have delivered the one weapon he needs to win the war.
