More than 35 years ago, Ash Williams began his quest against evil in The Evil Dead, but the upcoming season of Ash vs. Evil Dead might finally solve the mystery of why he was chosen for this specific battle, according to star Bruce Campbell.
When speaking with Dread Central, Campbell teased what fans can expect of the upcoming third season, hinting, “Things won’t all be well, because the mythology’s going to kick in now, which will give us all an idea of why Ash was chosen โ this average idiotโฆthis fool was written of in an ancient book.”

He added, “So Season 3 is where it all will come to a head โ the ultimate mettle of the average man will be tested by these demonic forces, and if man fails, then evil will rule the earth โ those are the stakesโฆOH!, and he may be a father.”
In the original film, Ash headed to a remote cabin in the woods to enjoy a weekend away from the world, when the discovery of the Necronomicon, the Book of the Dead, led to an evil force descending upon the cabin and those residing inside. In the second film, with none of his friends surviving, Ash was left to fend for himself when a new group of weary travelers stumbled across the cabin and were forced to confront the dark forces as well.
In the third film, Army of Darkness, Ash was teleported to medieval times to wage war against, well, an Army of Darkness. Previous installments in the trilogy portrayed Ash as a hero of circumstance, having been thrown into extraordinary situations where he sought survival. Army of Darkness, however, introduced mythology that Ash had been destined for heroism, but without a subsequent film, the concept was never explored.
Fans were initially so thrilled to see Ash return to airwaves with Ash vs. Evil Dead that the mythology from previous films and unanswered questions weren’t as necessary, but it sounds like the third season will finally reveal to fans why Ash can’t seem to escape the Book of the Dead.
Ash vs. Evil Dead will return to Starz this fall.
