CNN is reporting tonight that Arizona Sen. John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Initially reported by the news agency's resident health expert, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Gupta revealed to Anderson Cooper that McCain had surgery on Friday to "remove a blood clot from above his left eye" known as a craniotomy.

While he has since returned to his home, Gupta reports McCain will need a combination of chemotherapy and radiation to continue recovering.

McCain's daughter, Meghan took to Twitter tonight to share a message with her fellow Americans of her father's condition, writing that her father's illness has affected everyone in their family.

TIME reports that during the procedure last week, surgeons successfully removed a 5-centimeter clot through an eyebrow incision. However, it proved to be much more serious.

While the Mayo Clinic released a statement sharing that McCain is recovering from his surgery "amazingly well" and his underlying health is "excellent," McCain's officer reports that the senator appreciates the outpouring of support he has received in the last few days and is in "good spirits."

McCain was first elected to the United States Senate in 1986. He then went on to a pair of unsuccessful presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2008, when he ran with Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin.
