McWilliams was fast asleep and woke up to a “crunching sound” as a black bear bit into the back of his head, dragging him 12 feet in about 15 seconds before letting go.
“I just woke up to a loud crunching sound and I remember a lot of pain, and just being drug across the ground by my head by a bear,” the teen said. “I kind of thought it was a dream for a second, I didn’t know what was going on.”

McWilliams said he punched the bear in the eye and nose before it let him go, as he knew fighting back was the best chance he had at survival.
“I was very afraid for my life,” he said. “After it dropped me and I got back to where everybody was, I just laid down, and the blood was all over my eyes and I couldn’t see. I thought I was blind.”
The teen was taken to a nearby hospital where he received nine stitches in his scalp. CBS Denver reports that a black bear believed to be the one that attacked McWilliams was trapped and euthanized on Monday.
As for McWiliams, he isn’t going to let the attack stop him from camping.
“No,” he said when asked if he was nervous to camp again. “I’ll probably go tomorrow night.”
